My daughters came to visit this summer, and one night we sat in my living room chatting about God.

First of all, how cool is that? One of the things we talked about was how sometimes we feel very close to him, and at other times it is as though we can’t feel his presence at all.

I looked at my lovely glass coffee table and said, “I believe God is like that table.”

My girls looked at me blankly.

“Think about it. It never moves even though we move. Sometime we are close enough to touch it, and even place all we have in our hands on it. At times, we even dump things on it, and use it as a place to sort things out.”

I sat my cup of tea on the table and took a deep breath…

I realized I was explaining the heart of my faith.

“Most of the time we move around it, or away from it, sometimes even far away. We leave it behind as we go on about our lives and don’t even give it a thought. Meanwhile, it sits there, in the same place, immovable. But we can always come back to it, and draw close, even touch it.” I laid my fingers softly on the gold rim of the beautiful table.

Since that evening, I’ve looked at my coffee table a little different every time I’m in that room. There was so much truth in that metaphor, because if there is one thing I’ve learned as a believer, it is that God never moves. I drift away, sometimes to the point I fall short, and feel unworthy to be near him.

But I moved.

I walked away.

What joy to know there is no distance that I’ve wandered that God did not hear me when I cried out to him. He’s always there, ready to rescue me, even in the darkest night, arms open wide to wrap around me when I return to him.
